I always feel a little sad when I listen to those music countdowns of one-hit wonders. I can’t help but think: what happened?
But maybe that isn’t you.
Maybe you find your routine is a real bore. You’d give anything for a one-hit anything. You’re sick of sitting in the same gray cubicle, caring about the latest form for credits and brainstorm meetings. You’d rather kick pebbles than sit another minute, and yet… nothing happens. You don’t stand up. You don’t even kick pebbles.
If this is sounding anything like yourself, today is the day to give wonder a chance.
Because just like those hits on the radio, you have a chance to resonate. Your ideas, work and influence can change the world – or maybe just someone in it.
Here are some ways to free your wonder:
Do more. I’ve always been a writer, but until a few weeks ago, my writing was only done on the clock. Then, I started this blog. Now, I’m writing more than ever to more people than ever, and it feels amazing. Don’t get me wrong – its not always easy to find time to write blog posts. But I’ve committed to do more for my writing career, and that means giving up some of my TV watching time. I think it’s pretty obvious which way the scales favor in that respect.
Do less. You heard me. Stop doing things that take away from your ability to do more wonder. Don’t handwrite baby shower invites when you can print 25 copies in a minute. Don’t spend hours getting ready to face the world when you can get out and start living in 30 minutes. Let high-maintenance acquaintances fade. Focus on wonder.
Do something. Go on a trip to a place that inspires you. Do some research at the library. Find out how much it would cost to do that one project you thought was impossible.
Reach out. Tear down the comfort box. Connect with others with the same ideals and let their wonder take your breath away.
