How To Live Life Like A Winter Sunset
White snow. Brown slush. Snow. Slush. Ice chunk.
My drive home from Milwaukee was boring and brown. I kept blinking to stay awake as my eyes watered from the heat blasting out of the vents. White snow, slush, ice chunk, bump.
Somewhere around Manitowoc, I was reminded how to live.
Spread across the sky was a soft, winter sunset. Hot pink at the horizon, lifting to orange, yellow, lime, indigo. It was breathtaking, even mixed with the frigid, white and brown.
It was the kind of moment when my eyes became clear and the confines of my car felt wide open.
It was the kind of moment to learn from. Here’s what became clear:
Be something beautiful. Even when your place in life feels cold and overwhelming. Let your dreams and vision for the future unfold everyday, no matter what.
Embrace the seasons of life. Life isn’t supposed to be perfect, but our imprint can be. We can leave a better footprint – bad hair day, morning meltdown and all.
Let colors brighten the sky of life. Here are some of my favorites: fun, laughter, kindness, appreciation, spontanity, art in all forms, kisses, wild abandon, truth.
Give others hope. Light the way for spring. Improve yourself and let the sun shine a little longer each day.
Take someone’s breath away. You don’t have to be a famous musician to let your melody sing to someone. You don’t have to be all Pacific Ocean with palm trees sunset glory. You can simply be exceptional to someone. To yourself
White snow. Slush. White snow. Slush.
My drive home from Milwaukee was boring and brown. I kept blinking to stay awake as my eyes watered from the heat blasting out of the car vents. Snow, slush, ice chunk, bump.
Somewhere on the road home, I found a treasure.
Spread across the sky was a soft, winter sunset. Hot pink at the horizon, lifting to orange, yellow, gray, blue. It was breathtaking, even mixed with the dry air and road bumps.
It was the kind of moment when my eyes became clear and the confines of my car felt wide open.
It was the kind of moment to learn from. Here’s what became clear:
Be something beautiful. Even when life feels cold and overwhelming. Let your dreams for the future unfold everyday, no matter what.
Embrace the seasons of life. Life isn’t supposed to be perfect, but our imprint can be. We can leave a better footprint – bad hair day, cold coffee, traffic jams and all.
Brighten the sky of life. Here are some of the best ways to keep life colorful: have fun, laugh, be kind, appreciate others, view art in all forms, kiss, compliment, be spontaneous, speak the truth.
Give others hope. Light the way for spring.
Take someone’s breath away. You don’t have to be a famous musician to inspire a new song. You don’t even have to be all “Pacific Ocean with palm trees” sunset. You can simply be exceptional to someone.
Even just yourself.

Beautiful. Taking your own breath away … that’s an accomplishment we don’t think much about – but it’s such an important one.
I’m loving the style of this post, Melissa.

I love it! Very beautiful, and exactly what I needed to brighten a dull day. @Jeffrey – Taking your own breath away, what a lovely way to put it!
I love to brighten your days, Tracy!
Hi Melissa,
“Be something beautiful.” – That is such a wonderful statement to read. We all can choose to do this. We can choose to project beauty into the world. And that’s something that, like the sunset you experienced, can brighten someone else’s day. Even yourself. What a great message to send!!
@ Lance – Thanks for your thoughtful comment. Cheers to a beautiful day.
Great thoughts.
Embracing the seasons of life is truly important. I think it is vital that every part of life be a learning experience. Even the winters of our lives.
I live in Florida so winter looks a lot like fall and spring but you get the idea
@ Ralph – Thanks for the comment. Can you send us some sunshine?
Hi Melissa, I clicked over from Jeffrey’s blog. Beautiful. It reminds me of a Thoreau quote: “It’s not what you look at that matters, it’s what you see.”
@ Belinda – Love that quote. Nice to meet another Jeffrey fan and thanks for the comment.
