It’s easy to think: Life will be so much better once this happens.
Once I get a raise.
Once the kids are older.
Once I have a baby.
Once I retire.
But that isn’t exactly how it goes. Because there will still be things you don’t like about life when you’re richer. Things you don’t love about having kids. Things you couldn’t plan for. And then what?
I’m not saying you should sit back and live an unhappy life. “Well – so much for that.”
Dream, hope and wish for the future. But don’t spend your life wishing away the moment you’re in, right now.
Take it to heart: The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
Look down, see how green it is, right under your toes.
This is your life, today, this morning. An endless landscape of possibility.
What do you love about today?

I love it Melissa – your attitude on life is contagious, honestly. We can all work and hope for a better tomorrow, but so often we forget to enjoy today – this moment, what we’re doing right now. Life’s short – as morbid and scary as it sounds. We’d all be a lot better off if we put aside our differences, embraced a little kindness, and enjoyed TODAY a little more.
Thanks for the inspiration & motivation. Have a great day!
@ Matt – Thanks for this heartfelt comment. You inspire me to keep writing, to keep trying and keep growing.
Melissa your posts always inspire me, to think better, to do better. Thank you!
What do I love about today? That we just had a winter storm and I am cozy inside with my tea. I get to spend all day reading history for my job and my hunny and I will be making dinner together tonight.
@ Kayla, thanks so much for this, your day sounds so cozy and comforting. I’m responding at a friend’s house, we’re getting ready to have salad, wine, then cake and ice cream. Today, I love this moment.
I love that even though things do not seem to be going the way I had hoped with work projects today, and my to-do list just keeps getting longer, it forces me to become more creative, and more selective about how I spend my time *today*…because once it’s gone, it’s gone. That extra cup of coffee with my cat on my lap and my husband sitting next to me will be time well spent.
@ Sarah – Amen to that! Work will always be there tomorrow. Family is most important.
I was asked on another site: When was the best time of your life? I wrote; “now”.
@ Lil – Love it! I second that.
Good words Melissa,
This has been a struggle for me lately – trying to balance family time with getting my blog/business off the ground.
Thinking about both though pretty much guarantees I’m not *spending* any time uselessly in front of the TV or surfing the web. I’m consciously *investing* my time – either in my business or wife and kids.
BTW just found your blog today via a random retweet. Def. plan to dig back into the archives a bit!
@ Mike – I am in the same boat when it comes to balance. Someone told me recently that taking the time to live the life you want will make you a better parent. It gets stressful at times, but I’m really trying to practice what I preach.
I’ll check out your blog now. Glad you found me!
Lovely. Thanks for reminding us that we can choose to live a great and happy life now.
@ Belinda – Thanks for stopping by.
Amen Melissa….it’s easy to think things are hard now and will be better tomorrow, but sometimes you wish you would have realized how good they were at the time. Especially with the kids – each age we say is more fun than the last, but you miss the stages that are behind you even when they seemed hard. Thanks for this reminder.
@ Amy – That is so true! Just Monday night we were looking through old photo albums and I told Mr. Right: Isn’t it amazing how easy those ages seem now?
Love today. Thanks for your comment.
