In a perfect world, I’d get to sleep until at least 8 a.m.
Little Boy wouldn’t jump out of bed with his volume on maximum, whistling and shouting random orders to the dog. In fact, in my perfect world, he would quietly knock and ask, “Is there anything I can help you with today?”
My hair would be straightened and volumized in all the right spots. No need for makeup – my skin looks radiant and zit-free.
In the kitchen, coffee would be brewing … the sun, shining just right, like sunlight on a dimmer.
I could snuggle up to Mr. Right for a few minutes of sleepy talk before we started our day. During sleepy talk, the kids would be reading in the sunlight, smiles on their faces, enjoying each other’s company.
* * *
It’s fun (ny?) to dream about this perfect world. Because life is rarely “my version” of perfect, no matter how hard I try to control or force the pieces together. (Save yourself some time – this doesn’t work.)
When I asked myself, “What do you really want?” I found myself daydreaming about this daily schedule. In reality, there isn’t a lot of wiggle room, with school routines and work. But what if – cue dreamy instrumentals – you could start over and choose a schedule that matched your perfect world?
What would it look like? Would you stay up until midnight? Sleep until noon?
Would you eat breakfast, lunch and dinner or choose a more organic eating schedule, where family could simply eat when hungry? Where everyone went to bed when they – amazing – felt tired?
Would you work during the day or at night? What form would weekends take?
I’ll ask again: What does life look like in your perfect world?
What do you dream about?

In my perfect world kids would understand the beauty of sleeping all night.
Melissa – your posts are always such a nice way to start the day. You leave me inspired. Thanks!
Working in a bead shop…..omgomgomg
My perfect world would include, snuggles each morning followed by a latte.
This perfect would include; time to go to work, come home, with still enough hours to make and eat a fabulous dinner, accomplish whatever it is I want to accomplish whether it be something for myself or something for my family, with enough time left over to allow for a conversation with my Hubby over a glass of wine and a good night’s sleep.
@ Shannon – Isn’t that the truth … having enough hours in the day. Your perfect day sounds like one I would love to try, too. I’ll check out your blog next – thanks for commenting!
@ Tracy – SQUEE
@ Jen – Ditto on the inspiration and cheers to kids sleeping all night. Just wait … Little Girl is almost 12 and she could sleep all night and all day if I let her.
Just wanted to say this is another awesome post of yours Melissa.

Someone might have a perfect world in your family. Perhaps in Little Boy’s perfect world it includes jumping out of bed with his volume on maximum, whistling and shouting random orders to the dog.
@ Paul – I am pretty sure that IS indeed his perfect world.
@ Cory – Thank you!
If I’m going to dream, well…
I’d live in that beautiful Pineapple Suite at the resort that my husband and I went to for our honeymoon. I would get to sleep 10 hrs every night and wake up to a beautiful, sunny, breezy morning and a view of the beach and palm trees. Coffee would be brewing and would, of course, not give me heartburn. Hubby and I would eat french toast and bacon and eggs, and maybe even hashbrowns, on the patio, and then we would go for a swim. Oh, and we would be able to afford all organic foods. And we wouldn’t have to work a “day job,” but rather be able to focus all our energies on our art…
But I’ll settle for being able to take an anniversary trip back to that resort, and doing our best to spend time on our art between our work. And Prilosec for the heartburn.
@ Michy – haha, I love it. What kind of art do you do?
Hmm… In my perfect world, the coffee would just make itself in the morning (I don’t have an automatic coffee pot). I prefer to work at night, but my design clients prefer to take calls in the morning. But that’s ok, it works for me.
Some days are more hectic than others. Still, I enjoy everyday. I work hard to try and live by that perfect schedule. It’s not always perfect (when is it really?). But I feel a sense of accomplishment and I think that that’s what matters.
@ Ricardo – That does sound perfect. I like the way you put a positive spin on this. Have a perfect day!
I would love to feel loved and needed by every single person in my family and ask me for some wisdomly advice. It’s so easy to only remember bad things about people and not the good things. So a perfect day would be not have any bad thoughts and not let things bother me.
@ Deeg – Well, I’ll go first, what advice can you give to me?
